About System Of A Down
System Of A Down formed in Los Angeles in 1994. The four members – Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan – are all of Armenian descent, and their music mixes metal with Armenian folk melodies, political lyrics and sudden changes of mood and tempo.
Toxicity (2001) went to number one in the US, as did both halves of the 2005 double album Mezmerize and Hypnotize. Their songs are a great challenge for drummers because they switch so often between fast, heavy and quiet sections.
Drumming on System Of A Down songs
John Dolmayan has to handle some of the most sudden changes in rock: fast, heavy sections can switch to quiet, melodic parts in a single bar. His playing is precise and creative, with tight unisons and big fills. System Of A Down songs are excellent for working on control, speed and dynamics.
